FRIEDA HARRIS
(THE WOMAN WHO PAINTED THE CROWLEY TAROT)
My first contact with the Crowley Tarot took place about five
years ago and I was immediately fascinated with its beautiful
pictures.A lot is known about Aleister Crowley, the man who
developed the Thoth Tarot (as the Crowley Tarot is also called),
so much that I don't want to start with it. But who was the woman
who expressed Crowley's symbols in her pictures?
Marguerit Frieda Bloxam was born in 1877 as the daughter of a
surgeon. 1901 she married Percey Alfred Harris (later Sir Percey
Harris) a very popular liberal politician, with whom she had two
sons. Frida had worked as an artist since her youth. In 1937 she
met Aleister Crowley and in contrast to other women she didn't
fall for his charmes and their relationship remained a
friendship. Two years after they met, Crowley and Frieda started
with their work to rearrange the 78 Tarot cards which took them
five years (1938-1943). In 1944 the cards were published as a
limited edition.
It is said that Crowley died 1947 in Frieda's care.
After her husband's death in 1952 Frieda went to India where she
died in 1962.
Unfortunately that's all I know about Frieda Harris and if you
know more feel free to contact
me!
